As one thinks of the word community, we often think of those that live in a certain area of physical location. With the internet, we have especially expanded the idea of community to those with which we share common interests or ideas that can be found all over the world. We may think of a group of people that gather in our physical community that we share similar ideas with as an even more precise community in our lives. Upon reflection, it would seem most of our ideas of community need to find more strength and even more positive interaction and bonding than ever.
At times, it may be thought that our physical local community of where we live is not as strong as it once was even just decades ago. We spend more time inside our homes distracted by the television, the internet, or just do not desire to know our neighbors. Perhaps it is the fact that we do not have much in common with our neighbors that keep us from interacting and building those bonds. Should that not be the beauty of our local community? We all have something different to offer? Just as in the big picture, we all bring something different to the table. If we were all similar and had similar talents, then where is the diversity for a community to flourish? We cannot all be carpenters for who would grow the food?
During this time, many of us turn to the internet to find others that are of similar mind and heart. We see the world in a different light than most of our neighbors. We are not so concerned with the material things and can see what is happening in the world. We want to discuss those things with other people that also see what is happening and are not as distracted by the “weed” in the crack of the driveway as our neighbor may be. This is important as well. We need the peace in knowing that how we feel is not completely strange to this world and that others feel in a similar way. It gives us the strength to keep facing the truth of our world in this reality in this “time and place”. We each offer our perspective which creates the whole.
Our communities are important to us as they usually offer us the support that we need in our experience. It can be a neighbor helping you jump start your car, a fellow gardener down the road wanting to exchange seeds and tips on growing certain medicinal herbs, it can be the person that has that one bit of information to share that connects a few dots that you have struggled with for a time, or it can be that one person whose words help fuel the fire within when it is burning low. No matter what support we need, we find it in our community – one type or another.
There is more than just the physical local community and the interest/worldview based communities. Everything around us in every dimension is a part of our community. It is not just the people that we cross paths with on this experience. There is the animal and plant life around us that helps to maintain balance. There are those energies that we do not see with our two eyes that interact with us on another level that are a part of our community.
As many of us are watching the great changes that are happening, we understand that community on all levels will play an important role in how we experience this journey of ours. We may need our neighbors one day to help us if we lose power for a length of time, if trees fall on our house from a storm, if a flood threatens our ability to get out of the area, or the ability to feed our family if we are not ready for a breakdown in the food supply. We may need those we find on the world’s web to help us piece some of the puzzle together to have a better understanding of our true abilities and nature to help us make an impact. We need the bees, butterflies, and bats to help pollinate our gardens. We need the plants to coexist as they do to keep disease from killing our food source. We may need the help from a place we cannot see, but perhaps we can feel that help. A little nudge here or there, a fix to a mistake we made in the garden that will help our garden grow a bit better, a synchronicity to help us on our way, or a little protection from something else we cannot see.
With everything we see happening in our present experience on this planet, we need to ensure that we are reaching out to all of our community as far and wide as that spans and past that which we don’t feel we can always touch. It is important not to discount any soul or energy from its true contribution. Perhaps the contribution is not understood at this time, but we must still reach out and offer a bit of love to all in our community. Even if some of our community may not be known to us, we still should not discount the possibility of their existence.
