Week 3 Fantasy Football Recap – The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Welcome to the Week 2 Fantasy Football Recap:  The Good, The Bad, The Ugly! Every week you will get a mostly fantasy football oriented recap from my point of view. If I deviate a bit from football, there is probably a good reason, bear with me and thanks for taking the time to stop by.

By Tom Schriner, The Fantasy Football Junkie

“Don’t talk to me about fantasy football.”

That’s what my wife told me today during the course of all the NFL action. I had just gotten back from a nice outing with my neighbor where we enjoyed watching the Detroit Lions take on the Washington Redskins. I being the Lions fan got the better end of that outing but it was a great time. We both took in multiple games while enjoying food from Buffalo Wild Wings and each took our respective breaks to check on our fantasy teams, and before we knew it, it was time to head back to the subdivision. Little did I know, my wife was not having as good of a time when it came to football. She has a lot of pride and is one of the most competitive women I know. If you ever get the privilege to watch her coach volleyball for her middle school, you will understand. And her being competitive carries over to her fantasy football team.

“What is up with C.J. Spiller? Cecil Shorts has me zero points,” she says while giving me that stare that is nothing short of 110% annoyed.

All I can say is that, “It’s early honey, there is still a lot of football to be played.” She didn’t want to hear that. It only got worse for her as the night wore on. She thought maybe things would get better after her quarterback got going. Her quarterback is Colin Kaepernick.

Don’t talk to her about fantasy football… at least for a couple of days.

THE GOOD

•  Forgive me for getting so dang excited right now but I just saw one sweet catch from Antonio Brown! A one-handed touchdown in the back of the end zone while falling down to help bring the Steelers back to within one score for a tie. It was his second TD of the game and easily makes the Good list. He and the Steelers are making this Sunday Night Football game watchable after a terrible start. After the way this game started out, I thought it might put be to sleep. But now I’m excited and I just made a cup of coffee. It’s go time.

•  The Indianapolis Colts made a huge move earlier in the week by trading their 2014 first round draft pick for Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson. Great move in my opinion although many think Trent is overrated, I do not. Once he gets going, he’ll be really good for the Colts.

•  But lets not forget about the guy whom the Colts brought in this season to help solidify the ground game. Ahmad Bradshaw had  a tremendous day in San Francisco. It was downright silly what the Colts did in the Bay area. They basically came in, took names, and left. Indianapolis ran the ball 39 times for 179 yards and three touchdowns while Bradshaw accounted for 95 of them.

•  I didn’t give the Cleveland Browns a chance today. On the road without your starting running back and quarterback from a week ago, I wouldn’t have taken 14 points with the Browns in a bet. And I know I wasn’t alone, the Minnesota Vikings were the third most taken team in survivor pick’em games. But this is football and on any given Sunday, the team that no one thinks can win, can. Congratulations to the Browns and QB Brian Hoyer who didn’t play great but did enough to make the team wonder about keeping Weeden injured for one more week.

•  Welcome back Josh Gordon. I didn’t think he would have much of an impact for the Brown in his first game back with Hoyer at QB but man was I wrong. He finished with 10 receptions for 146 yards and a score and was the highest scoring WR of the day before Antonio Brown went off on Sunday Night.

•  Did you know Santonio Holmes is still playing football? I know, it was kind of a shock to me to. Holmes finished with 154 yards on just 5 catches along with a go ahead 69 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

THE BAD

•  As of this writing, Geno Smith, Jake Locker, EJ Manuel, Christian Ponder, Brian Hoyer and Tarvaris Jackson were all among the top 15 fantasy quarterbacks. Nothing about this is good. Congrats to these guys for being relevant but it’s not helping any fantasy owner.

•  His owners aren’t expecting the world at this point but Tom Brady has become a fantasy liability. Until you see him and his receivers have a truly good fantasy day, it might be time to roll with a suitable second option if you have it. He’s scored 15, 11, and 15 points respectively the past three weeks. In comparison, EJ Manuel has scored 16, 14 and 19 while being owned in just 15% of leagues.

•  And the top 15 among tight ends was equally as unfriendly to fantasy owners. Zach miller, Scott Chandler, Gavin Escobar, Luke Wilson, Dion Sims, Levine Troilolo, Joseph Fauria and David Johnson were all in the top 15.

•  Aaron Rodgers was a little off on Sunday and targeted WR Randal Cobb 11 times but hooked on only five of them for 54 yards. It’s nothing to worry about but Cobb owners didn’t get much from him this week.

THE UGLY

•  This was supposed to be the week that Colin Kaepernick got back on track. At home against the still not-great Indianapolis Colts defense who let Terrelle Pryor and Ryan Tannehill play decently against them, Kaep should break out for a huge game, right? Well, maybe not. He failed to score a touchdown in his second straight game. He failed to crack 200 total yards. And he completed just 13 of his 27 attempts. Kaep is starting to look like a rookie and his owners should be worried.

•  Eli Manning: 12/23, 119 Yds, 0 TD, 1 INT… nuff said.

•  Victor Cruz: 8 Targets, 3 REC, 25 YDS

•  Hakeem Nicks: 1 Target, 0 REC, 0 YDS

•  Just one more on the Giants, the offensive line gave Eli absolutely no time to throw the ball and allowed the Panthers to sack him seven times.
