Beet Juice - Why You Should Be Drinking It

Beetroot or beet is generally underrated, but is used in the Mediterranean diet, cooked with its green tops and served chilled in a dressing of olive oil and lemon juice. It has a wonderful rich red colour which comes from betacyanin. The juice and the root have been used for several centuries in Europe to combat cancers. Beetroot juice has been found to lower blood pressure and it also has valuable and extremely potent antioxidant properties. This means that it can combat the T-cells and free radicals which cause damage to healthy cells and can cause cancer.
A study of athletes undertaken at the University of Exeter, UK has shown that regular consumption of beetroot juice can lower the amount of oxygen intake which helps to reduce fatigue and increase stamina. However if you drink beetroot juice regularly you may get Beeturia, or red urine. This is not a serious complaint, but if you didn't know about this effect, you may have thought you are passing blood in your urine. Eating a lot of asparagus can turn the urine green and eating beetroot or drinking its juice can turn the urine red or pink.
Beetroot contains vitamins C, A (in the form of beta-carotene), B1, 2 and 3 along with the minerals calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, sodium and smaller amounts of iron, zinc, copper, manganese and selenium.
According to researchers it can help protect against cancer, improve menstrual problems, help cure anaemia, improve circulation and calm the nerves - apart from its other activities mentioned above. Beets can also help with prostate problems as can pomegranate juice. It is believed that beet juice can help to disperse kidney stones and help with indigestion.
You can drink beet juice straight but it actually tastes better if juiced with carrots, celery and apples. You can also juice it with a 3 inch piece of peeled ginger root and lemon juice. Chop the beetroot and other ingredients before juicing them to help the juicer or blender perform well.
You will need 4 beets, peeled and chopped, 3 apples, cored and chopped and a 3 inch piece of ginger root peeled and thinly sliced. Put these ingredients in a juicer of mixer and blend, then strain through a sieve or a piece of muslin and discard the fibres from the vegetables and fruit. It is recommended to drink 500 ml of beet juice a day especially for men who want to protect their prostate glands. You should experiment with mixtures so that you get one which suits you.
The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that beets were an aphrodisiac, and as beets are rich in boron, which is essential for hormone production, they might have been on to something. In folk lore it is said that if a man and woman share the same beet then they will fall in love. May be you can pep up your love life with a daily intake of beet juice as well as benefiting your health.
